Just a few miles to the north and east of Craigmillar Castle is the Firth of Forth, and Fife beyond. A mile or so due north, dominating the landscape, stands the 823 feet high Arthur's Seat map. At the foot of this ancient volcano lies Duddingston Loch, 580 yards wide by 260 long. On the eastern edge of the loch is Duddingston Kirk, built around 1124, and Duddingston Village. To the north east are the housing estates of Craigmillar, Niddrie and Greendykes, in times past the town of Nedrieff.

To the east, upon the horizon some 18 miles distant, beyond Aberlady Bay is North Berwick Law and

a few degrees East again, the Bass Rock, a rocky outcrop in the firth and home to many thousands of sea birds.
To the south west is Liberton, formely the parish of Libberton.
After Arthur's Seat, the most prominent landmark, three miles to the north west, is Edinburgh Castle standing proud amid the Old Town of Edinburgh.
